I try not to read the local press too often. It just annoys me for any number of reasons that are not necessary to go into right now. But every once in a while my learned friends on the interpipes will point out something that makes me want to go out and burn down the Irish News. Even if it was printed in the Belfast Telegraph. something like this:

Where to begin with this trough of shit my darlings? Like most of the work that goes into Telegraph opinion pieces, not a lot of thought has been put into it. As is revealed in Ms McDowell'-s explosive first paragraph. Now it might just be me, but isn't kicking off with the phrase "...I had not given a lot of thought..." something of a bold journalistic gambit? Additionally, isn't "paying more attention" a basic conceit of any form of reportage? But let us put ad hominem asides, err, aside and focus on the TRUTH BOMBS being dropped here.

Once a year in Ye Olde Village of Belfast we get the opportunity to experience the classic forms of street performing that appear all over the world, many of them hundreds of years old representing divergent cultures and societies that may well have passed into history. While many of these seem to the naked eye to be mere "foolery" there are many subtle nuances to consider. Is that motorised robot designed to look like a homeless man a tasteless piss take ? Or is it a subtle satire of the way we treat the homeless? Somtimes if you look beyond FACE VALUE you might notice a SUBTEXT. If you are too shallow to try any of these ideas might I recommend November's "Festival of Saucers, Envelopes and Small Streams." I suspect they'll be at your depth.

The Festival of Fools allows, for at least a short period of the year, Joe Belfast to see some stuff they would not ordinarily get (it's considered too twee for the rest of the year). Without subsidies, much of the arts scene in Northern Ireland would simply not exist. Simply put, these things nine times out of ten don't make a profit. Why? BECAUSE IT ISN'T ALWAYS ABOUT MONEY. SOMETIMES IT'S ABOUT EXPRESSION, OR ARTISTIC ENDEAVOUR, OR JUST TRYING SOMETHING NEW!!!!!!! Obviously because of this, these events might have limited appeal. It's not for everyone. So without vital funding we wouldn't get any of this good stuff.

All right the Cathedral Quarter Festival certainly attracts the crowds because it has big name acts, but if that festival isn't subsidised in some fashion either by arts council or sponsorship I will eat my fucking hat. In fact, just checked--massive arts council funding which was recently cut. Still, maybe that will result in a higher quality of craic, eh?

Basically what our Ms McDowell is saying is "I saw some people doing stuff I didn't understand or like. Some people told me they didn't like it. Other people may have. I couldn't be bothered to check. I saw Andrew Maxwell at the Cathedral Quarter last year and there were loads of people at that. That must be much better."

And a final note: if we were left to have our "craic" without funding, we would be left with either top end commercial acts who can pull a crowd themselves without any subsidy, or acts that are free. Like street performers. who apparently we are too sophisticated for. We can leave that for the bumpkins in Covent Garden.

Don't mean to turn this into the "Darren Mc Cay" Blog but I'm refining my characters at the moment. This is a redesign. The brief for these characters is that they exist in the 1940s and that their costumes should reflect that. I've tried to keep the designs simple yet familiar. Was busy over Christmas so didnt get time do something christmasish and childhoody but started a quick one the other night! I was going to have the caption along the lines of "Tigger always was a bit of a c**t" but thought it best to keep it pc!

Had to be, and still is in my opinion the greatest cartoon ever. I remember being really young and jumping around the sofa at around 5.30 to the sound, you know the one- baaaa-daaaa-dat-da-dad-a-da- except much better than that collection of vowels and consonants, then bang the bank would blow up! aaahhh good times, good times.
Well anyways, heres my really quick colour sketch. This started out with the intention of being my first digital painting, but I found it quite a bit harder than I expected so it became more graphical. I wouldnt be surprised if theres more animated series pieces from me...

We have a new member- Shaun Whoriskey. A Derry man and a hell of an artist in both 2d and 3d forms. I'm quite pleased to have Shaun join us as it almost feels like we started drawing together, way back in primary one- he drew dinosaurs and I drew guys with weapons. Ahh good times. We'll keep these theme weeks going, from monday to monday, we'll let manga run until the 7th then Shaun can pick the next theme and we'll rotate it about, coolio?

This craic is no craic at all!! I feel like me drawing ability has reset to that of 7 year old! Looking at stuff online and some advise from Sir Neville of Chamberlain, the thing that I liked about the style was everything more angular, so with that in mind I attempted this very dodgy sketch using only the line tool. Well mostly the line tool theres about 5% pen tool. I dont like this sketch but thought I'd throw it up anyway, all greif in the comments below thank you.

Really like, just type Gothic into google and nearly everything you get up is girl with loads of eye makeup. Ok i get that thats the look but for me gothic darker, seedier,.. so I came up with this... yes there is a girl in it but with a little more sinister shit going on too. Really enjoying doing this as it something I wouldn't normally try to do. Done this again using manga studio, its rough round the edges but I was going for atmosphere over prettiness.

...when you said gothic John the only person I wanted to draw was, Death. She's from 'Sandman' if you don't know her already. Done this in manga studio then threw in some greys with photoshop. Script Frenzy

Hi there! I know I haven't posted in a while - my moving out of NI and back to France has taken most of my time. Now that I've pretty much settled down, I'd like to talk to you about the Script Frenzy.

The Script Frenzy is a sister event of the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), which I posted about much earlier on this blog (read here). The lowdown is similar: you are challenged to write a 100-page script in 30 days.

The challenge starts on April 1st at midnight and ends on April 30th at 23:59. The script can be for anything that needs one : film, TV, radio, documentary, stage play, stand-up comedy and - of course - comics. And it can be about anything you want to write about - serious or funny, realistic or imaginary, etc, etc...

The Frenzy starts in around a week, so you will have time to sign up and figure out a story and - if you have never done that before - learn how to type a comic script. We have pretty much covered that in the CADI course at the Verbal Arts Centre but there are still some useful resources on the web. The websites of publishing houses like Marvel or Dark Horse have some help pages or templates and the SF site provides also help about how to format a comic script. The forums are here to help you too.

So, if you have a comic project you have been entertaining for a while, it's the right opportunity to get it started. As for me, I intend to adapt my novel Red Hot Moon - more exactly, start the script anew as a lot of things have changed in my head and the pages I've drawn for the course aren't right anymore.

definately the most recurring character ive posted up here, but ive just always liked that detective look. Nearing the hundredth post now boys,-whose gonna get there??? .....well not really, i never really liked the whole zombie eat brain things, was never that into zombies neither until i read 'i am legended', buzz of that book read it at least four times, the films about 1% if even of the content of the book. It puts a bit of believable science behind the myth, rocking.
But anyway this will be the last thing i show of this reseige/zombie themed stuff - what started out as me just trying to figure out manga studio, has taken upon itself to be become a full on story, that was nice of it wasn't it. So this is the pencilled page, done digitally and took a heck of a long time, without a doubt the most people ive tried to draw in one scene.
When i was doing it i just kept thinking about the avengers breakout, cause ever single panel is a full on crowd scene, how the hell your man (its bendis or finch cant remember which one draws) can do that shit!!

I've been meaning to get back to posting stuff here, I just got into a bit of rut there recently, being a lazy that is. Well no excuses now, for christmas the wonderful holly got me a graphics tablet which is-saahhhhwwweeettt!!! So now that alot of my work will be on the computer ive no reason to not put stuff up.

I really expected the change to graphics tablet to be a long tidious one, but its not!! You can be rough, it doesnt matter, easier to tidying up, it just, rocking. I in no way have have mastered it, but after only four days of using it I'm feeling pretty comfortable with it. The first drawing here was the last one i done out of about 6 or 7, just trying to get used to using the tablet with photoshop, was quiet pleased with it.
This one I done today on manga studio- what a program!!- if your drawing on the computer get the free 30 day trial of manga studio, the difference is unreal. I only got it what, about 9 hours ago, and this is one of the things i got done.

Hi there! I know - long time no post, but I still follow you ;)

After one month of noveling frenzy, I got back to digital drawing and have just completed my first effort with Adobe Illustrator.

These two guys are Rory and Callum Madden, the main characters from my werewolf story Red Hot Moon. I did them in SD and in vibrant colours as I wanted a bit of fun with them (and fight winter blues), yet their world is actually much much darker. I'll post more serious chara designs later... :)

Thats most of my main characters,though I will be posting more.So far I've just been doing this to get the hang of photoshop and to see my characters coloured the way I want. I wasn't too worried about the finish of the artwork as these 13 drawings were all done in pencil with the blacks boosted in photoshop.

Ive been reading some of the new avengers and remembered that i used to love drawing the art in comic when i was younger so I gave it a go here, straight up copying but it reminded me of the simpler times!!

These two pages where from mithic again, just done them as a way of locking the idea down, they must be two years old at this stage but it seems that the inking i was originally doing is actually what ive resorted back these days.
page 2 wasnt completly finished but you'll get the idea.

I'm completely cheating with these posts, this stuff here is again about 2 years old. When i get an idea of something whether it be a character or a story i tend to do a collage effect of images, i guess it just helps me get to grips with it more.

havent had anything up in ages and ive been working every so slowly on this in what time i have spare, it isnt even finished colouring yet but had to put something up. Hopefully be making more regular posts over next few days.
